Galway 3
Clare 1
Clare are out of this years Oscar Traynor Cup despite putting in a good performance against Galway at Terryland Park on Thursday. After losing to Limerick in their first match Clare needed to beat Galway to remain in the competition and from the start the team gave it everything to try and achieve that result. In the end they will look back on some very poor decisions by the home officials that ultimately put an end to Clare’s interest in this year’s competition. Two penalty claims for Clare waved away in the first half. Two offside decisions in the second half and a very dubious free kick that led to Galway’s equaliser in the 77th minute were some of the many talking points from a good game of football throughout.
Clare started brightly and Mikey Mahony’s goal bound header from a Richie Lillis free kick in the first minute was deflected out for a corner. Lillis well delivered corner moments later was scrambled away by the Galway defence. Lunga Balman had an effort well saved by Kieran Kilkelly in the Galway goal on 9 minutes. Galway’s best effort from the early exchanges was from a free kick that was headed to safety by Matty Nugent. Richie Lillis made a good run from defence on 15 minutes and when the defence backed off his shot from distance narrowly missed the target. Moments later a good passing move from Clare by David McCarthy and Con Collins in midfield created another chance for Mahony that brought another good save from Kilkelly. More good play from Clare on 19 minutes got Gary Collins through on goal but just as he was about to pull the trigger the linesman flagged for a dubious handball in the build up. Clare were playing very well and a foul on Balman on the edge of the box created a good opportunity on 24 minutes. Unfortunately Collins free kick went over the crossbar. Galway had a long range effort from 2009 Junior International player of the year Seamie Crowe narrowly miss the target on 25 minutes. One of the first big talking points of the first half occurred on 27 minutes when Balman got some space in the box. He was pulled and dragged by the Galway defence and eventually taken down but no penalty was given despite the protests from Clare. An effort from outside the box by McCarthy brought a fine save out of Kilkelly again on 30 minutes. Galway’s best chance of the half came on 32 minutes when a good run down the left wing and shot by Benny Lawless forced John Healy into making a great save. The rebound fell to Barry Moran and his tame first time effort fell into the hands of Healy. From Healy’s clearance Clare broke quickly from the back and well delivered cross from Simon Cuddy was brilliantly controlled by McCarthy who slid inside the last defender and struck an unstoppable effort to the back of the Galway net. This was no more than Clare deserved at this point. Clare were now well on top and a good run from Balman on 35 minutes forced the Galway defence into another reckless challenge but claims for a penalty were once again waived away. On 38 minutes Cuddy made another good run down the right wing and crossed for Mahony who broke inside the box and as he was about to shoot Vinny O’Connor in the Galway defence stepped across his path and played the man and got no touch on the ball but yet again there was no whistle and Galway survived. Galway finished the half strongly with efforts from Crowe and Simon Murray going over the crossbar.
Galway brought on Athenry’s Mark Moran for Gerry McGrath at half time. This brought the number of players on the Galway team from the Connacht Junior Cup Champions of 2010 Athenry to seven. While Clare were the better team in the first half it was Galway who had the better of the chances in the second half. In the first minute of the second half Murray picked up a ball when at least 2 yards offside but with no flag he ran through on the Clare goal and Healy was called on to get down low to make a brilliant save. An effort from Keith Ward on 59 minutes missed the target when in a good position. Mahony made a great run and looked like he had beaten the offside trap on 61 minutes but just as he was about to shoot the flag went up for offside. On 65 minutes Clare brought on Trevor Maxwell for Balman who picked up an injury. Galway brought on Simon Walsh and Darren Kirb for Ward and Barry Moran moments later. Another effort from Crowe after being put through on goal by Alan O’Donovan brought another brilliant save out of Healy in the Clare goal on 70 minutes. A decisive moment in the match occurred on 76 minutes. A foul on the left wing resulted in an advantage to Galway. The referee appeared to be trying to see the number of the Clare player but let the game continue. He shouted at the linesman to get his number. Next minute a Galway player ran into Russell on the edge of the box and when the referee got back to concentrating on the game he gave a very dubious free to Galway on the edge of the box. He then issued yellow cards to Russell and Maxwell. As Clare lined up the wall the referee pushed them back 11 yards instead of the required 10 yards. Protests from Clare on the distance were ignored. The extra yard made all the difference and O’Donovan took full advantage to score direct from the free kick and put Galway back on level terms. On their second half play they deserved to be level but not in this manner. Clare now had to push forward in search of another goal as a draw would not be enough to remain in the competition. Derk Fahy was sprung from the bench for McNaboe in an effort to add some extra pace to the attack. An effort from McCarthy went wide of the right post on 82 minutes. Galway broke from the back on 84 minutes with Clare pushing forward and good control from O’Donovan on the edge of the box created an opening. Unfortunately for Clare his effort took a deflection on its way towards goal and Healy had no chance to make a save and Galway were now in front. Clare threw on youths star Niall Whelan to try and salvage a result but it was not to be and Galway wrapped up the 3 points in the 93 minute with a goal from Simon Murray after another offside decision went against Clare as the linesman seemed more interested in what was behind him than what was happening on the pitch and missed Murray being well offside. Credit must go to Clare on a good performance despite missing some regulars from the squad through injury and illness but sadly hopes are dashed for another season of winning back the Oscar Traynor Cup.

Congratulations to Padraigh Sutton on getting his FIFA badge this week. Its a great honor for all involved with soccer in the county to have one of the best referees in the game refereeing matches in our League every week. Padraigh's great achievement shows what can be achieved by hard work and dedication. Earlier this year Padraigh was appointed as an official to a Champions League match between Romanian side CFR Cluj and Swiss outfit FC Basel. He was also appointed an official to the FAI Cup Final this year. With his FIFA badge we can now look forward to seeing Padraigh on the World stage on a regular basis.
CDSL Poker Classic
Thanks to all the clubs who supported the CDSL Poker Classic on Friday night. Congratulations to Derek Dormer (Clarecastle) and Kieran Fox (Kilkishen) on sharing a 1st prize of €1200.
Officials from the FAI were down last week to meet representatives from the CDSL and CSSL to set the wheels in motion for next years FAI AGM. A local organising committee has been setup to look after the running of the AGM in conjunction with the FAI. They will be down again in February to meet delegates from the clubs and distribute the grant forms to clubs for grants that will be available for hosting the FAI AGM. An email will be sent to clubs shortly with ideas from previous AGM's.
The November delegate meeting will take place on Monday 29th November at 9PM in the Abbey room at the West County Hotel. The next registration fee of 300e and the youths levy of 100e is due on the night.

GOOD AWAY VICTORY FOR CLARE YOUTHS
Roscommon 0
Clare 2
Clare had a good victory away to Roscommon in the first round of the Inter
League Youths Cup at Newbridge on Saturday. Niall Whelan gave Clare a great
start when he put them ahead after only 6 minutes. Whelan got some space on
the edge of the box and his low shot to the right corner beat Noel Fallon in
the Roscommon goal. Roscommon enjoyed some good possesion after the Clare
goal and Colin Smythe had to make a vital interception on 10 minutes at the
expense of a corner to stop Tom Gallagher getting through on goal. From the
resultant corner Conor Freeley had a good effort well saved by Ciaran
MacMathuna in the Clare goal. Clare bought on Dylan Blake for Thomas Clair
who took a knock after 25 minutes and within a minute Blake put in a good
cross for Daragh Sexton whose header just went wide of the target. Darren
Murphy cut out a good Roscommon attack on 28 minutes and set Blake free on
the right wing. Blake combined well with Sexton to create a chance for
Ruairi Norrby whose effort narrowly missed the target. Roscommon had a great
chance to draw level on 38 minutes when Shay Smith got free in the box but
with the keeper to beat he missed the target. Clare finished the half strong
and it was Whelan again who was pulling to the fore. A good effort from
Whelan destined for the top right corner took a deflection out for a corner
off Kevin Byrne. From the corner another good effort from Whelan was cleared
off the line by Michael Green. The half time whistle sounded shortly after
this with Roscommon happy to get in at the break only a goal down.
Clare started the second half like they finished the first half with Daragh
Corry having a good effort just go over the crossbar from a well delivered
cross from Norrby on the left wing. A great run out of defence by Colin
Smyth on 55 minutes found Norrby in some space. Norrby showed a nice touch
to beat his man and cross for Sexton whose well struck effort brought a good
save out of Fallon in goals. Clare were well on top at this stage and
pressing hard for a second goal. A good ball out of defence by Paraic
O'Malley found Norrby again and his cross from the left should really have
been put away by Sexton but his effort agonisingly missed the target. Jack
Walsh had a good long range effort on 60 minutes which again just went the
wrong side of the right post. Roscommon were still in the game at 1-0 and a
mistake at the back resulted in a great chance for them only for Gallagher
to miss kick with only the keeper to beat. Two minutes later Roscommon had
another great chance from a corner kick when Green got a free header but
directed it straight at MacMathuna who made a good save. Clare brought on
Mark Roche for Thomas McKeown on 65 minutes. Sexton had another good effort
for Clare on 67 minutes well saved by Fallon and again on 69 minutes Norrby
had a good chance for Clare only for his left foot strike to narrowly miss
the right corner of the net. Roscommon put a good move together on 72
minutes and substitute Gary Patterson should have done better when he missed
the target with only MacMathuna to beat. A slip at the back on 75 minutes
created another good chance for Roscommon but luckily for Clare Shay Smiths
effort missed the target. Clare got a great chance to kill off the game on
77 minutes when a Daragh Sexton was taken down in the box and the referee
awarded a penalty. Daragh Corry's effort from the spot was well saved by
Fallon and the result was still in doubt. A well delivered free kick from
Jack Walsh on 80 minutes was met in the air by Norrby but yet again a Clare
effort went wide of the target. Clare threw on Mark Healy for Norrby on 82
minutes. Healy won a good ball on the left wing on 85 minutes and found
Sexton in space. Sexton rounded the advancing keeper and finished well to
ensure Clare would be claiming all three points. Whelan had another good
effort in the 90th minute well saved by Fallon. The final whistle sounded
shortly after this and Clare celebrated a good away victory. Clare will take
on Galway at home in their next match on the 27th November and hopes will be
high of getting a result against one of the stronger teams in the Youths
competition.

Aviva Stadium Update 23rd March 2010
“ The count-down to the first international match at Aviva stadium stepped up a notch today with completion of work on the new pitch. The pitch which was seeded last week is a state of the art fibre elastic surface and represents the latest generation of playing surfaces. It has all the advantages of increased traction, while also reducing the hardness of the playing surface and is significantly more resilient than a natural turf product.
The Stadium will be handed over to joint owners, the FAI and the IRFU at the end of next month. The first international match to be played there in 141 days time will be the eagerly anticipated clash between Giovanni Trapattoni's boys in green and two times world champions, Argentina on August 11. “”
