Connolly knock out Avenue in Lisdoon
Avenue Utd A 0
Connolly Celtic 1
(Report by Gerry Scanlan)
Avenue Utd A crashed out of this season’s Munster Junior Cup competition when they were beaten by unfancied first division side Connolly Celtic at Lisdoonvarna on Sunday. Before referee John Murray got things underway Connolly were dealt a blow when their regular netminder Niall Quinn could not start due to injury and his place between the posts was taken by Bernard Field. The big prize for the winners was a fourth round home tie against crack Limerick side Pike Rovers. Both sides settled well in the soft underfoot conditions and the first opportunity came on 6 minutes when a glancing David Herlihy header was just wide of the Connolly goal from a good David Smith cross. On ten minutes the result of this game was decided when a sweeping move down the left wing saw Jan Fleck and ex Avenue favourite Mickey Byrnes combining and the latter’s good cross was met by the inrushing Kieran Dillon whose crisp firm header beat John Healy in the Avenue goal. This goal prompted Avenue into action and for the remainder of the first period they surged forward in search of what was to be the elusive equaliser. Their cause was not helped on 30 minutes when they lost the influential full back Dylan Casey due to injury to be replaced by David McCarthy. However they created quite a few chances with Alex, sub McCarthy and Herlihy all coming close. The first yellow card arrived on 35 minutes when Ken Kennedy was penalised for a late tackle and from the resultant free Mikey Mahoney broke clear for Avenue and seemed to be upended in the area but referee Murray who was in a good position was unimpressed by the appeals and waved play to continue. The second half began with Connolly sending Senan McCarthy into the fray in place of Keith O’Looney and we saw Avenue throw everything at Connolly but the proverbial kitchen sink. At times some frantic defending by the winners and some very wasteful play by Avenue contributed to the end result. A great right footed effort by Avenue’s Smith forced a great save by Connolly keeper Field on 75 minutes who dived full stretch to push the ball around the post at the expense of a corner which yielded nothing. Substitute’s Sean Corry and Colm Mullan were introduced by the Ennis side and Byrnes was withdrawn by the winners being replaced by Pat hogan. Try as they might until the final whistle Avenue could not get back on parity and the Connolly outfit advanced to the next round. Jan Fleck was a revelation in midfield for Connolly as were the Dillon brothers while Bernard Field proved a very good replacement between the posts. Avenues dismal season continues having lost the League Cup Final some weeks ago to Ennis rivals Lifford and now crashing out of Munster but for some wasteful play in front of goal this result could have been much different.
