Manus Celtic B        0      AET - Newmarket Celtic B won 3-2 on penalties

Newmarket Celtic B won the Third Division League Cup final on Sunday at Cassidy Park after a penalty shoot out victory over Manus Celtic B. In an entertaining game throughout with both sides playing good football neither side deserved to lose and in the end the only way they could be separated was on penalties.

Manus had the best of the early exchanges and on 10 minutes Newmarket keeper Brian Tierney had to make a great save to keep out a David Casey free kick that was destined for the top left corner. On 15 minutes Andrew Page should have put Manus in front but Ciaran McCoy got back to clear the ball off the Newmarket line with Tierney beaten. On 20 minutes Newmarket created their best chance and Manus keeper Christopher Guinnane had to dive full length to keep out a shot from Chris Lake. Moments later Guinnane was called on again to push a shot from Christopher Noonan over the bar. On 35 minutes Manus went close again to opening the scoring after a good run and shot from Ambrose Talty narrowly missed the target. Just before half-time Newmarket had one last chance to break the deadlock when Brendan O'Meara got some space in the box but his shot was saved on the line by Senan Flynn.

The pattern continued in the second half with both sides creating chances and neither side able to break the deadlock. Shane O'Brien had a great chance to put Newmarket in front but his shot flew over the crossbar. On 55 minutes Manus a shot by Casey blocked on the line and moments later a Mikey McDonagh header rebounded off the crossbar. O'Brien had another shot rebound off the left post on 58 minutes. On 60 minutes Casey nearly scored for Manus but somehow the Newmarket defence scrambled the ball off the line. Adam Healy and Barry Guinnane had further chances for Manus cleared off the line in quick succession in the 70th minute. The last chance of normal time fell to Ambrose Talty on 85 minutes after Newmarket's Derek Moynihan misjudged a long clearance out of the Manus defence but somehow with only the keeper to beat his shot missed the target.

Nothing could separate the sides in extra time and it took penalties to decide the winners of this keenly contested match.

Newmarket missed first after a good save from Christoper Guinnane and Barry Guinnane gave Manus the advantage. Collins scored for Newmarket and Manus kicked their penalty high and wide. O'Meara put Newmarket in front and Ian Considine leveled again for Manus. Guinnane made another great save to give Manus a great chance but they could not take advantage and kicked their penalty wide of the left post. It was now down to sudden death and Christopher Noonan gave Newmarket the lead again. Tierney saved Manus last penalty and Newmarket were crowed Third Division League Cup champions. After the game League Secretary Oliver Fitzpatrick presented the Cup to Newmarket captain Brian Tierney.
